Google may be getting into games again, this time on YouTube

[ad_1]

After Stadia, Google is reportedly once again testing the waters in the gaming category. YouTube is testing a new product called ‘Playables,’ which aims to introduce online gaming to its platform. An email was sent to Google employees, inviting them to participate in the testing phase of this new offering, as per the Wall Street Journal.
According to the report, YouTube’s Playables feature enables users to play different games within the YouTube web or mobile applications. Initially, the company will introduce “easily shareable games”. One of the games available for testing is the popular arcade game, Stack Bounce.
The games will be available to play on YouTube’s website using web browsers or on mobile devices that run on Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS operating systems.
So far, not much is known about the project. “Gaming has long been a focus at YouTube,” a company spokesman said in a statement. “We’re always experimenting with new features, but have nothing to announce right now.”
Shut Stadia in 2022
Last year, Google announced that they would be shutting down their consumer gaming service, Stadia, due to insufficient user engagement. Stadia allowed users to stream games from the cloud onto various devices, but the service never took off the way the company had hoped.
According to Stadia chief Phil Harrison, Google recognized the potential of using the technology of the service in other areas of the company, including YouTube, after the shutdown.
According to the report, hosting online games on YouTube is a strategy being pursued by CEO Neal Mohan to explore new areas of growth due to a decline in advertising spending.
It is unknown if the ‘Playables’ would be made available to all the users or if it would be a perk included with YouTube’s Premium subscription. The email to employees did not mention how the company plans to profit from these games.
