Surface: Microsoft announces date for its biggest event of 2023: What to expect

It is going to be a busy season when it comes to tech events. Apple is rumoured to host an event for the iPhone launch in September. Google could do a Pixel event in October. And now Microsoft has confirmed that it will be hosting a “special” event as well. According to multiple reports, the Satya Nadella-led company has sent out media invites. “Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 21, 2023, for a special Microsoft event,” reads the invite.

What to expect from the event

In all likelihood, it will be a hardware event as Microsoft has already held a special AI event earlier this year. So we do expect Microsoft to unveil new Surface devices at the event. A recent report by Windows Central suggested that the Surface Studio 2 could be the headline act at the event. The report suggests that Microsoft could introduce a 64GB RAM variant of the laptop for the first time. Apart from that it is expected that the Surface Studio 2 could come with the latest Intel line of processors and up to an Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU. Considering that the Surface Studio has always been the flagship device in the lineup, these rumoured specs could turn out to be true.
There were rumours about a Surface Studio 2 arriving with AMD processors. However, it is unlikely that those machines could be unveiled at the September 21 event.
Apart from Surface devices, Microsoft could introduce new AI capabilities in Windows 11. For the last six months or so, Microsoft’s major focus area has been incorporating AI tools across its apps and services. So don’t be surprised if there are more than a few mentions of AI at the event. However, hardware will be the main focus for the company.
